AVA Certification: What It Is, How to Get It, and Why It Matters

If you have encountered the AVA® assessment and wondered what it takes to truly understand and apply the methodology within your organization, not just receive a report, but meaningfully interpret the results and apply them to support organization discussions, that is exactly what AVA certification is designed to accomplish.

This article outlines what AVA certification is, who it is designed for, what the process involves, and why certified analysts tend to gain significantly more value from the tool than those who rely solely on outside interpretation.

A Brief Recap of AVA

AVA, or Activity Vector Analysis, is a workplace behavioral assessment backed by more than 75 years of research. It measures an individual’s behavioral tendencies across five key vectors: Assertiveness, Sociability, Calmness, Conformity, and Conscious Restraint.

The assessment produces three profiles that reflect how an individual may present to others, how they may be adapting to their current role, and how they are likely to behave at their core.

Unlike assessments that place individuals into fixed categories, types, or labels, AVA is interpreted as a dynamic system that focuses on understanding the relationship between measurements.  Meaningful interpretation is found in the complete Pattern Shape, the interaction among the measurements and the behavioral tendencies those relationships reveal, rather than a single score.

Because of this, effective interpretation requires training. AVA is not designed to be used as a simple read and apply tool.

What AVA Certification Means

Becoming a certified AVA Analyst involves formal training in the methodology, interpretation, and application of the AVA system.

Certified analysts develop the ability to analyze the results and apply those insights across real organizational decisions such as hiring, coaching, team development, and performance discussions.

This is an important distinction. Many assessment tools are designed for self-service use, where managers interpret summary reports independently. AVA takes a different approach. Because it measures behavior with greater nuance, interpretation is a learned skill. Certification is how that capability is developed.

Certified analysts are also trained to work with the Job Demand Analysis, which defines the behavioral demands of a role. Comparing an individual’s AVA profile to a Job Demand Analysis provides a structured and consistent way to evaluate alignment between a person and a position.

Certification Options

Who Should Pursue Certification

AVA certification is most valuable for individuals who are regularly involved in talent decisions and want a more structured and reliable way to understand behavior.  This often includes:

  • HR and talent acquisition leaders seeking a consistent approach to selection

  • Managers and executives who want deeper insight into employee performance and development

  • Organizational development professionals building scalable talent systems

  • People operations leaders responsible for those systems long-term

One of the key advantages of certification is the ability to develop internal capability. When organizations have certified analysts in house, they are able to interpret and apply results in real time without relying on external resources. Over time, this leads to greater consistency, stronger decision making, and more effective use of the assessment.

What to Expect from Training

AVA certification seminars are led by experienced professionals from AVA Assessment Associates. The training is designed to be practical and applied rather than purely theoretical.  Participants learn the methodology, work through real interpretation exercises, and develop the ability to read profiles accurately within context.

The objective is not simply to understand definitions, but to build the capability to contribute meaningful behavioral insight in real conversations whether evaluating a candidate, supporting a manager, or addressing team dynamics.

Why Certification Increases Value

There is a clear difference between receiving AVA results and being able to interpret them effectively. Organizations that invest in certification tend to use AVA more consistently and with greater confidence because their teams understand how to apply the information.

This consistent use is where the value becomes evident. Behavioral insights can influence hiring decisions, improve coaching effectiveness, and help identify underlying causes of team challenges.  When this capability exists internally, those insights become part of everyday decision making rather than something accessed occasionally through an external partner.

Over time, certified analysts also tend to develop stronger pattern recognition around behavior, which extends beyond formal assessments into broader leadership and management practices.
